Interstate 5 + Highway 156 – Fastest RouteFor travelers who prefer the quickest drive, taking Interstate 5 north and cutting west on California State Route 156 toward Monterey is the most direct option. This route travels through California’s Central Valley farmland before reconnecting with the coast near Monterey and Carmel.Estimated time: 4.5–5 hours Flying to Carmel-by-the-Sea: The easiest way to reach Carmel-by-the-Sea is by flying into Monterey Regional Airport, located just about 10 minutes from downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea. Alternatively, guests may also fly into San Jose International Airport (about 1 hour away) or San Francisco International Airport (about 2 hours away), both of which offer a wider selection of flights and rental car options. From any of these airports, a scenic drive along California’s beautiful coastline will bring you to charming Carmel.

Pfeiffer BeachSycamore Canyon Road, Big Sur, CA 93920This is a renowned, picturesque spot famous for its purple-tinted sand, dramatic rock formations, and the iconic "Keyhole Rock" arch. It is a day-use-only area managed by the US Forest Service, featuring a narrow, unmarked access road (Sycamore Canyon Road) and limited parking that often fills up early. The beach is particularly beautiful during sunset, when the light shines through the keyhole arch.

The reserve has several miles of trails. Visitors can view the coastal scenery, explore the coast, and picnic. The quality of the underwater environment in the adjacent marine protected areas draws a large number of scuba divers. Whaler's Cove is often used by divers to begin their dives. Other activities include kayaking, snorkeling and diving.
